Working at Scale: Powder Coating Massive Shade Structures with Confidence

Powder coating a large shade structure for a basketball court

When it comes to large-scale outdoor structures—like the impressive barrel-vaulted shade structure installed at a Bridgeman Downs basketball court—performance, durability, and aesthetics are non-negotiable. At Superior Coaters, we specialise in powder coating at scale, delivering high-performance finishes that stand up to Queensland’s tough conditions.

As the go-to powder coating partner for structural steel fabricators and builders across Brisbane and South East Queensland, we were proud to play a part in the Versatile Structures project that brought all-weather protection to a local community facility.

In this article, we’ll explore how large-scale powder coating works, the unique challenges of coating oversized steel elements, and how our state-of-the-art facility enables us to deliver exceptional results—on time, every time.

Large Projects Require Large Capacity

Not all powder coaters are built for scale. With structures like the 33.2 × 20.4 m Bridgeman Downs canopy, individual steel elements often exceed the dimensions many coaters can handle. That’s where Superior Coaters stands apart.

Our powder coating facility features a 14 m oven, one of the largest in Queensland. That gives us the ability to coat extended beams, columns, and custom-fabricated elements without splicing or compromising structural integrity.

We work closely with engineers, architects, and commercial builders to ensure that every piece arrives coated to specification—whether it’s destined for a car park, a school, or a public recreation area.

The Project: Basketball Court Shade in Bridgeman Downs

In early 2024, Versatile Structures completed a striking shade structure over an outdoor basketball court in Brisbane’s northern suburb of Bridgeman Downs. Designed to maximise sun protection and visual appeal, the curved, architectural canopy uses Monotec 370 fabric supported by structural steel finished in a matte black Dulux powder coat.

The project had several unique challenges:

  • A large-span, curved roof required custom-fabricated, oversized steel members
  • Exposure to UV, rain, and wind in an open public setting
  • High aesthetic standards due to the site’s community-facing purpose

Superior Coaters was brought in to handle the finishing process, thanks to our reputation for quality and capacity.

Our Process: Built for Quality at Every Step

For major projects, we use a multi-stage preparation and coating process that ensures every piece performs and looks exceptional.

  1. Abrasive Blasting

We start by grit blasting all steel surfaces in our dedicated blast booth. This removes mill scale, rust, and contaminants, while also giving the surface the right profile for powder adhesion. Abrasive blasting is essential for long-term coating durability—particularly in external environments. Learn more about our abrasive blasting services.

  1. Pre-Treatment & Cleaning

Once blasted, parts are cleaned, degassed, and inspected for defects. This step eliminates the risk of contaminants compromising the finish, especially on thick or hollow steel sections.

  1. Powder Application

Using electrostatic guns, we apply a Dulux-accredited powder coat—typically in two coats for structural applications. This can include a zinc-rich primer and a durable topcoat such as Dulux’s Alumi Shield™ or Duratec™ range, depending on the end-use.

  1. Curing

Our 14 m oven ensures even, thorough curing of oversized pieces. Controlled heating ensures the powder flows and bonds perfectly to the substrate, forming a tough, uniform layer that resists chipping, peeling, and fading.

Dulux Accredited, Trusted Across Queensland

As a Dulux Accredited Powder Coater, we’re independently assessed and approved to apply Dulux coatings to the highest standards. This gives clients peace of mind when it comes to long-term performance, warranties, and compliance with Australian standards.

We also provide full colour-matching services, giving architects and builders the ability to match brand colours, blend into natural landscapes, or create bold design statements—just like the Bridgeman Downs shade structure’s matte black finish.

Why Powder Coating is Perfect for Public Structures

Compared to traditional wet painting, powder coating offers several advantages for public infrastructure projects:

  • Durability – Resists corrosion, UV degradation, chipping, and scratches.
  • Eco-Friendly – Solvent-free and produces less waste.
  • Consistent Finish – No drips, runs, or inconsistencies.
  • Low Maintenance – Easy to clean and doesn’t require repainting for many years.

That’s why more and more government bodies, schools, and private developers are opting for powder-coated finishes on structures like:

  • Shade sails and canopies
  • Public shelters and walkways
  • Playground equipment and sports infrastructure
  • Street furniture and fencing

Designed for Efficiency and Reliability

With over two decades of experience, our team understands the logistical demands of large projects. We work hard to streamline every part of the process—from scheduling and material handling to inspection and delivery. Our workflows are optimised for:

  • Fast turnaround times
  • Minimal site delays
  • Strict quality control
  • Pre-treatment compatibility with galvanised and mild steel

We welcome one-off jobs and long-term production partnerships. If you’re a fabricator, developer or procurement manager, get in touch to discuss how we can support your next project.

Conclusion: Confidence in Every Coated Structure

The Bridgeman Downs basketball court shade structure is more than a functional shelter—it’s a testament to what’s possible when engineering, design, and finishing excellence come together. At Superior Coaters, we take pride in supporting projects of this calibre by delivering powder coating at scale, with care.

Whether you’re working on community infrastructure, large-scale commercial builds, or custom fabrication projects, we’re here to provide dependable coating solutions that look better, last longer, and go the distance—just like the structures we help bring to life.
